Krieger, Brecko, Soares Named ABCA All-Region

June 18, 2008

A trio of George Mason baseball players were honored on Wednesday with the announcement of the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region teams as Scott Krieger was named first-team All-East and Ryan Brecko and Ryan Soares were named second-team All-East.

Krieger, a second-team All-CAA selection, started all 55 games for Mason and broke his own school record for single-season homers when he hit 21. He also batted .381 with 60 RBI, 64 runs, 16 doubles, a .761 slugging percentage and a .483 on-base percentage. He also broke the school's career home run record running his three-year total to 49. During the season, Krieger tied the school's record for home runs in a game, with three, and he also became the first Mason player to ever accomplish that feat twice. Krieger was named to the CAA All-Tournament Team after setting a tournament record with 14 RBI.

Brecko, a third-team All-CAA selection, was among the CAA's leaders in opponent's batting average. He appeared in 20 games with 15 of those appearances coming in relief. He led Mason in wins, with seven, saves, with four, and ERA, with a 3.94 mark. He allowed the opposition to bat just .237 and he gave up just five home runs in 61.2 innings.

Soares started all 55 games for the Patriots committing just six errors on the season. He was second on the team in steals, third in home runs, RBI and doubles, fourth in hits and runs and fifth in batting average. He hit .315 with seven homers, 49 RBI, 44 runs, 76 hits and six steals. He had 241 at-bats on the year, one shy of tying the school record.

In total, 28 players were named to the All-East Region Team and of those 28, more than half were from the Colonial Athletic Association. Of the fifteen CAA players selected, UNC Wilmington had five, Mason had three, James Madison had three, William & Mary had two and Towson had one. Krieger was one of just three juniors chosen to the 14-member first team and Brecko and Soares were two of the six underclassmen chosen to the second team.
